ENGLISH COLLOCATIONS in Use – Module 16

We will consider 5 common collocations:

come to terms with
could have been
get a joke
make a noise
take a look

Now back to our collocations. The first is . . .
come to terms with
to begin to accept or understand a new, or painful, or difficult situation

Slide 6:
The picture shows a lonely man sitting in a park, drinking.

Sentence: He just couldn’t come to terms with the fact that his company fired him.

In other words, this man found it very difficult to accept or understand the fact that he had lost his job.

Slide 7:
In the picture we see a wheelchair on the beach with the disabled person in the sea.

Sentence: Amazingly, he quickly came to terms with his physical condition and made a decision to enjoy life as much as possible!

could have been
something that was possible in the past but didn’t happen

Slide 9:
The picture shows famous actor Gene Hackman at a book signing in 2008.

Sentence: Gene Hackman could have been a highly successful Hollywood actor for the rest of his life, but changed direction in 2004 to become a novelist.

Slide 10:
The picture shows a couple who seem to have had a disagreement.

Sentence: It could have been a perfect date if she hadn’t made a stupid comment about his tie which upset him.

The picture shows three women all laughing together.

Sentence: They shared the same sense of humour and were always quick to get a joke.

Slide 13:
In the picture we see one man laughing and the other looking confused.

Sentence: His friend was always trying to make him laugh but unfortunately he could never get his jokes.

make a noise
to create a noise or disturbance
British English: to complain or talk about something repeatedly to draw attention to it

Slide 15:
The picture shows a group of noisy children.

Sentence: When children get together, it’s almost impossible for them not to make a noise.

Now here’s an example in British English of the other meaning of make a noise – to complain or talk about something repeatedly . . .

Slide 16:
The picture shows a woman holding her credit card, on the phone to the bank.

Sentence: Some people believe unless you make a noise about something, you can never get anything done.

Finally . . .

turn attention towards something, to examine

Slide 18:
In the picture we see a dentist with his colleague.

Sentence: The dentist welcomed me with a big smile and said: “Please, come and sit in the chair and let’s take a look at these teeth of yours.”

Slide 19:
In the picture we see a woman holding her mobile phone.

Sentence: She called to her husband: “When you’ve got a moment, could you take a look at my phone? I can’t get the messenger to work!”

Again, the 5 collocations are:

Now let’s really put these collocations into long-term memory through repetition. Fill in the blanks as we go.
