What is a CONCEPT? – Definition of CONCEPT

Let’s consider 3 illustrated sentence examples for the word. Then later in the video we will learn a number of synonyms, and finally a group of common collocations to help with your fluency in English.

Slide 4:
The picture shows computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee with clipart showing the world wide web.

Sentence example: Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist, is credited with developing the concept of a World Wide Web.

In other words, Tim Berners-Lee had the idea or understanding of how a global network of knowledge could develop.

Slide 5:
We see a picture of a happy, elderly couple.

Sentence example: In view of high divorce rates and modern views towards sex and marriage, the question arises: “Is the concept of lifelong fidelity dead?”

In other words, in the modern world where attitudes toward sex, marriage and divorce have changed dramatically, is the idea of being faithful to one person for life outdated?

Slide 6:
Thirdly, we see a woman wearing unusual platform shoes.

Sentence example: This is an interesting concept in shoe fashion, but is it practical or comfortable?

Slide 7:
Now concept can sometimes be used as an adjective as in this example.

The picture shows a futuristic looking car. The sentence reads: A concept car is a car made to exhibit or display new styling and technology.

Slide 8:
The sentence reads: Conceptual art places emphasis on the idea or concept behind the work, rather than the end result, or finished object.

The picture shows Yoko Ono, a conceptual artist, with her exhibition “Half-a-Wind” Show“. This exhibit shows household items cut in half with a couple standing, contemplating the meaning.
