Let’s look at some examples of words with the roots FLECT and FLEX

Slide 4:
REFLECT

Definition:

  1. to throw or bend back from a surface, such as light or sound
  2. to think seriously

Slide 5:
The picture shows a lake in front of a house surrounded by trees.

Sentence example: The beautiful autumn colours were reflected in the water.

Next, an example of REFLECT with the meaning of thinking seriously.

Slide 6:
The picture shows a man sitting on a bench, gazing out to sea.

Sentence example: He sat down looking out over the sea and reflected for a few minutes on the events of the day.

Slide 7:
DEFLECT

Definition: to cause to turn aside, to bend or deviate

Slide 8:
The picture shows the Barbie doll Wonder Woman in the likeness of Gal Gadot.

Sentence example: Here we see Wonder Woman deflecting bullets with her shield.

Slide 9:
INFLECTION

Definition:

  1. modulation, a change in pitch or tone of the voice
  2. a bend or angle

Slide 10:
The picture shows a businessman speaking on his mobile phone.

Sentence example: The inflection in his voice indicated he was a little irritated.

FLEXIBLE

Definition: capable of being bent, pliable, not rigid

Slide 12:
The picture shows a woman working from home on her laptop.

Sentence example: She had a flexible work arrangement, some days working from home and on other days she would go to the office.

Slide 13:
REFLEX

Definition: an involuntary action such as a sneeze, or a blink;
an automatic response or reaction

Slide 14:
In the picture we see a baby holding on to someone’s finger.

Sentence examples Stroking a baby’s palm causes the baby to close their fingers in a grasp, and this grasp reflex can continue until the baby is 5 or 6 months old.
