What Does the Prefix COM Mean?

Slide 2:
The prefix COM- means: with | together

Note: COM- is a form of the prefix CO-. CO- becomes COM- before the letters B, P, and M.

Slide 3:

combat: to oppose in battle, to fight with

The sentence reads: A US marine is prepared for combat as he patrols a village in Farah province, Afghanistan.

Slide 4:
The picture shows a group of hockey players in front of the net.
commotion: agitated disturbance, excitement, confusion, (literally ‘with motion’)

The sentence reads: During the first period of the hockey game there was quite a commotion in front of the net.

The picture shows a man sitting at a table, writing.
compile: to bring together, to collect

The sentence reads: He hastily compiled a list of the things he needed.

Slide 6:
The picture shows a very small electric car on a Paris street.
compact: pressed or joined together; occupying little space

The sentence reads: I heard he was getting a compact car, but I never imagined it would be this compact!

The picture shows a group of neighbours at a street party.
community: a group of people living together in one location; people with common interests

The sentence reads: There was a wonderful community spirit in town that day.

The picture shows a medical team smiling for the photograph
commend: to express approval, to praise

The sentence reads: The medical team was commended for doing a remarkable job!

The picture shows a door chained and held by two locks.
combination: a sequence of numbers or letters; a union of separate parts

The sentence reads: Unfortunately he forgot the combination!

Slide 10:
So remember, when you see the prefix com-, look for a meaning of ‘with something or someone’ or ‘together’.
