Definition: Government of the people, for the people.

Sentence example: The 2011 movie “The Lady” documents the compelling story of Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar and her struggle to bring democracy to her homeland.

DEMAGOGUE

Definition: A leader who obtains power by rousing the prejudices of the people.

Slide 6:
Sentence example: Joseph McCarthy, a Republican U.S. Senator, led extensive investigations in the 1950’s regarding anyone suspected of sympathizing with communism.

The word “McCarthyism” is now used to describe methods used by a demagogue, including unjustified attacks on a person’s character.

EPIDEMIC

Definition: Spreading rapidly by infection and affecting many people at the same time.

Slide 8:
Sentence example: The Spanish Flu of 1918 is described as a pandemic rather than an epidemic. An epidemic may refer to a disease which spreads rapidly to many people, whereas a pandemic is a global outbreak.

DEMOGRAPHIC

Definition: A statistic relating to human population such as births, deaths, gender, income, age, etc.

Sentence example: Google Analytics is a service provided by Google which offers detailed information regarding a web site’s traffic and demographics.
