At the end of the 16th century, English acquired the current meaning:

Let’s look at the word influence as it relates to people . . .

Sentence: The 2021 biographical sports drama, King Richard, vividly portrays the huge influence Richard Williams had on his daughters Venus and Serena and their tennis careers.

Now let’s look at an example of influence relating to objects . . .

Sentence: Michael Faraday (1791-1867) studied the influence of a magnet on iron filings, which contributed to his understanding of electromagnetism.
