Example: Best-selling author Rebecca Wells, who was diagnosed with Lyme’s disease in 2004 said:

“I believe that illness has led me to a life of gratitude, so I consider Lyme disease at this point in my life to be a blessing in disguise.”

In other words, although being diagnosed with a serious illness like Lyme’s disease is a very negative experience, Rebecca Wells found it made her feel grateful for the positive things in her life. In this sense, there was a benefit, a blessing.

Example: When Oprah Winfrey was fired as an evening news reporter after being told she was unfit for television news, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

She was recruited for a low profile talk-show, and in months, had taken it from last place in the ratings, to the highest place!

In other words, although being fired from your job is usually very distressing and a backward step, in the case of Oprah Winfrey it opened up a new opportunity which led to fame and fortune.

Example: The rainy day turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

After sharing the umbrella, they started dating!

In other words, while many people don’t like rainy days, she found it led to starting a relationship after she shared her umbrella.

So the next time you want to describe something that appeared to be a misfortune, but actually turned out well, call it:

“a blessing in disguise”
