AVANT-GARDE: Definition

noun: artists, writers, musicians, etc. whose ideas, methods and techniques are experimental, unorthodox, or in advance of what is generally accepted

adjective: relating to an innovative group, especially in the arts

The French term avant-guard means vanguard in English, in other words, the part of an army that goes in advance or goes ahead of the main body of soldiers

Note: In English, avant-garde us usually hyphenated.
