ENGLISH COLLOCATIONS in Use – Module 7

Learning English collocations in use makes language learning much easier, and it can greatly improve your fluency and confidence. In this video we examine 5 common collocations.

Two illustrated examples are used for each of these common expressions which is then followed by two repeat Modules so these English collocations we well embedded in your memory. Prepositions can be very confusing for English students. Learn them as part of collocations in English and your accuracy will increase.

You will build a mental library of common English phrases. Spend a moment looking at the picture and then listen carefully as the sentence example using the collocation is used and start memorizing these daily English expressions.

In this video, learn the meaning and definition of:

  • jealous of
  • fascinated by
  • pleased with
  • interested in
  • responsible for

A review and repeat section at the end will help you to commit these 5 collocations to memory. Even if you feel confident with these collocations, do the Repeat 2 exercise. It is done at a fast rate, and this will test whether you have instant recognition.

Slide 3:
We will consider 5 common collocations:

  • jealous of
  • fascinated by
  • pleased with
  • interested in
  • responsible for

Slide 4:
jealous of
(fear of losing something to someone else; envy or resentment of good things that happen to other people)

Slide 5:
She was always jealous of her brother who seemed to get all the attention.

Slide 6:
There were persistent rumours that the other two members of The Supremes were jealous of Diana Ross and the success she achieved.

Slide 7:
fascinated by
(something that captures the interest and attention of someone)

Slide 8:
The children were absolutely fascinated by the hand puppet theatre.

Slide 9:
The cat seemed fascinated by the butterflies flitting around.

Slide 10:
pleased with
(to be happy or satisfied about someone or something)

Slide 11:
His Mum asked: Why are you looking so pleased with yourself?”

Slide 12:
The doctor seemed quite pleased with the test results.

Slide 13:
interested in
(having an interest or involvement in something)

Note: “interested in” is not as intense as “fascinated by”

Slide 14:
One reason they got together is because they were both interested in photography.

Slide 15:
Her husband could tell by the look on her face that she wasn’t very interested in hearing about his day at work.

Slide 16:
responsible for
(having an obligation to do something, having control over or care for someone)

Slide 17:
The Irish Republican Army (IRA) claimed responsibility for the bomb which destroyed part of the Brighton hotel in which British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was staying in 1984.

Slide 18:
A maitre d’ is responsible for welcoming guests into a restaurant and overseeing the service of food and beverages.

Note: Maitre d’ is used in English as an abbreviation of the French maître d’hôtel
(“master of the house”). Head waiter is an alternative designation.

Slide 19:
Again, the 5 collocations are:

  • jealous of
  • fascinated by
  • pleased with
  • interested in
  • responsible for
