Slide 3:
We will consider 5 common collocations:

  • absolute despair
  • deep thought
  • valid reason
  • strong smell
  • natural disaster

Slide 4:
absolute despair
(an extreme feeling that there is no hope left)

Slide 5:
When he received the call that his company had lost their main contract, he felt absolute despair.

Slide 6:
She was in absolute despair when her boy was late coming home from school.

Slide 7:
deep thought
(completely absorbed in thought, unaware of what one’s environment)

Slide 8:
He was in such deep thought he never heard his wife’s voice in the background.

Slide 9:
It looked like he was in deep thought, but actually, he was just watching someone walk their dog.

Slide 10:
valid reason
(a reason based on logical, sensible reasoning)

Slide 11:
There is no valid reason why nursing home residents should suffer neglect or abuse from those who should be providing care.

Slide 12:
After all the children grew up and left home, they could see no valid reason for keeping such a large house.

Slide 13:
strong smell
(a powerful smell that is immediately noticeable)

Slide 14:
As soon as she entered the front door, she detected a strong smell coming from the kitchen.

Slide 15:
Although lilies are beautiful, some people can’t put up with the strong smell in the home.

Slide 16:
natural disaster
(a natural event due to the forces of nature that cause great damage or loss of life, e.g. flood, earthquake, hurricane)

Slide 17:
An IFRC* report showed that there has been a 35% increase in the number of natural disasters around the world since the 1990s.

*International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies

Slide 18:
The Yangtze River floods in China in 1931 rank as the deadliest natural disaster in world history.

Slide 19:
Again, the 5 collocations are:

  • jealous of
  • fascinated by
  • pleased with
  • interested in
  • responsible for
