What is the Meaning of BRAIN DRAIN?

The meaning of BRAIN DRAIN:

the large-scale loss of trained professional personnel to another country or company, because of better opportunities or higher salary.

A more formal term is: HUMAN CAPITAL FLIGHT

Note: The term Brain Drain was originally used in the 1960s when there was a migration of skilled personnel from the UK to the USA. British scientists, doctors, academics, and other professionals moved to America because of better pay and conditions of work.

The Indian government’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs released statistics showing that the largest brain drain in the world in 2015 was from India.

“Brain-Drain and Brain Gain (Human Capital in European peripheral regions) is a 5- partner project led by a Dutch university which addresses the phenomena of Brain-drain (exodus of high qualified employees in peripheral areas or loss of highly skilled young professionals to other regions) and brain gain (inward migration of high qualified employees or the return of older, experienced, highly educated people back to their “home” region) in three areas (Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland).”

This poster advertised an event held in Warsaw, Poland in 2016 which examined the issue of thousands of skilled Polish women working in Germany, what was termed a “Female Brain Drain”.
