A mnemonic is a memory device such as an image, comical story, or rhyming word, that can quickly bring a word back to mind.

Here is the first word . . .

Slide 4:
INVEST
Pronounced: in◦VEST with stress on the 2nd syllable.

DEFINITION: to put money into a scheme, or property hoping to receive a profit

STORY: He is not going to get any profit by keeping his money in his vest!

SENTENCE EXAMPLE: Investing in property is regarded as a safe, long-term investment option.

HONOUR
Pronounced: ON◦ur with stress on the 1st syllable.

DEFINITION: to hold in high respect or esteem

STORY: The guest didn’t show any honour or respect to the bride when he accidentally stood on her wedding dress and didn’t even apologize.

SENTENCE EXAMPLE: In Japanese culture, bowing shows honour to an older person.

OPPOSITE
Pronounced: OPP◦uh◦zit with stress on the 1st syllable.

DEFINITION: 1.located directly across from something
2. completely different

STORY: Two hippos sit face to face, opposite each other in the mud.

SENTENCE EXAMPLE: Although they were twins, their personalities were quite opposite.

MISERABLE
Pronounced: MIZ◦ruh◦bull with stress on the 1st syllable.

DEFINITION: very unhappy or uncomfortable

STORY: The miser was not very happy when he was chased by a bull.

The clipart shows a little boy sick in bed.

SENTENCE EXAMPLE: He stayed home all week with the flu, feeling miserable.

Pronounced: NO◦tiss with stress on the 1st syllable.

DEFINITION: become aware of, pay attention to something

STORY: As he was making a note of the address, he wasn’t aware he was standing on ice and slipped.
