A mnemonic is a memory device such as an image, comical story, or rhyming word, that can quickly bring a word back to mind.

Here is the first word . . .

Slide 4:
APATHETIC
Pronounced: ap◦a◦THET◦ic with stress on the 3rd syllable.

DEFINITION: showing or feeling no enthusiasm or interest in something

The clipart shows a mother urging her daughter to become an athlete.

STORY: Her mother wanted her to be more athletic, but her daughter was too apathetic.
(ATHLETIC . . . APATHETIC)

The clipart shows a person voting in an election.

SENTENCE EXAMPLE: In many countries there is low participation in elections because voters are too apathetic.

DOMINANT
Pronounced: DOM◦in◦unt with stress on the 1st syllable.

DEFINITION: having power and influence over others

The clipart shows the Royal Albert Hall in London with an ant on the roof.

STORY: Because he lived on the dome of the Royal Albert Hall, London, he was known as the DOME ANT, and had influence over all the other ants.
(DOME ANT. . . DOMINANT)

The clipart shows a person’s right hand, pointing.

SENTENCE EXAMPLE: According to statistics, the right hand is a person’s dominant hand in 90% of the population.

SURPLUS
Pronounced: SUR◦plus with stress on the 1st syllable.

DEFINITION: an excess, more than what is needed

STORY: The teacher gave extra marks to his favourite students so the children nicknamed him Sir Plus.

DEFINITION: to cause someone to believe something, or accept a point of view

STORY: When she dropped her purse, she persuaded her friend to wade across the puddle to get it.
