MNEMONICS for English Vocabulary No. 2

A mnemonic is a memory device such as an image, comical story, or rhyming word, that can quickly bring a word back to mind.

Here is the first word . . .

Slide 4:
IMMACULATE
Pronounced: ih◦MACK◦you◦lut with stress on the 2nd syllable.

DEFINITION: perfectly clean, neat, spotless

The clipart shows a mug of coffee being spilled over a computer.

STORY: The office worker angrily shouted to his colleague: “My iMAC was perfectly clean and spotless before YOU spilled your LATTE over it!”
(iMAC-YOU-LATTE IMMACULATE)

The clipart shows a man cleaning and polishing his car.

SENTENCE EXAMPLE: He was forever cleaning and polishing his car and kept it in immaculate condition.

ACQUISITION
Pronounced: ah◦qwih◦ZISH◦un with stress on the 3rd syllable.

DEFINITION: an asset bought or obtained, the act of gaining possession

The clipart shows an octupus waving at a diver.

STORY: The diver bought a new pair of glasses called AQUA VISION, for seeing clearly underwater.
(AQUA VISION . . . ACQUISITION)

The clipart shows the entrance to the British Museum.

SENTENCE EXAMPLE: Visit the British Museum’s web site to see a list of its latest acquisitions.

LATENT
Pronounced: LAY◦tunt with stress on the 1st syllable.

DEFINITION: present or existing but not active or seen

The clipart shows someone sleeping in a tent.

STORY: The explorer lay in his tent sleeping while his colleague looked for him everywhere, not realizing he was there all the time.
(LAY TENT . . . LATENT)

The clipart shows a young artist holding his palette.

SENTENCE EXAMPLE: He was about 15 years old when his latent talent for painting began to emerge.

Slide 7:
AWKWARD
Pronounced: AWK◦word with stress on the 1st syllable.

DEFINITION: difficult to manage; causing discomfort

The clipart shows a hawk flying over a hospital bed.

STORY: The patient felt very uncomfortable seeing a hawk flying around in the hospital ward!
(HAWK WARD . . . AWKWARD)

The clipart shows two children having their photograph taken.

SENTENCE EXAMPLE: They always felt very awkward having their photo taken.

NAUTICAL
Pronounced: NAUT◦ih◦cul with stress on the 1st syllable.

DEFINITION: relating to ships, sailors or navigation

The clipart shows a sea captain and a No Tickling sign.

STORY: The sea captain gave strict instructions, no tickling on board ship.
(NO TICKLE . . . NAUTICLE)

The clipart shows a large ship on the ocean.

SENTENCE EXAMPLE: The right side of a ship is called the starboard side, to use the correct nautical term.
